Becoming More Conflict Smart™

Whenever we have people working together, we also have the potential for conflict. Conflict is about differences clashing in a way that seems problematic and can feel difficult to overcome. Conflict makes most of us somewhat uncomfortable, and we would prefer not to have to engage with it.

Become more conflict smart means having the ability to handle conflict constructively.

In the Becoming More Conflict Smart™ Program, we invite participants to explore both their attitudes and perspectives toward conflict along with their behaviours, through reflection and self-assessment.  As they create more awareness and develop their conflict knowledge through reflection and group discussion, we ask them to consider applications to conflict situations of their own, and set intentions for experimenting with new mindsets and behaviours in those contexts.

What the program covers

The program is designed in a modular format to allow for ease of customization to fit the context, for flexibility of delivery, and to allow for application and practice over time back on the job. Participants are introduced to concepts and skills and then apply and practice the learning between modules.

For each module there are specific application and practice suggestions to help guide participants in taking their learning from the classroom session into their everyday world.

Below is a quick snapshot of the modules:

1
BECOMING AWARE

In order to develop our skills for navigating conflict and engaging in difficult conversations, we need to develop awareness around our existing relationship with conflict – including how we think about it, feel in relation to it, and how we typically behave in response (THINK, FEEL, DO)

2
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPLICATIONS

From a place of heightened awareness, we can deepen our understanding of the implications of our current response, including the benefits and costs of thinking, feeling and behaving in our way – building on the threat/avoid brain strategy and making conflict distinctions.

3
MAKING NEW CHOICES

With greater understanding around our conflict derailers and informed by more constructive behaviors, we can aspire and create intention towards (with social needs in mind), and we can practice with real-time conflicts at work.
